Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 11.2.10: Slow dance, politics & Dublin Clubbing

Dear friends,

One of the Frivolously Asked Questions in the Forum ponders my perfect English. Thank you! However, I cannot accept this compliment for myself – I have a wonderful assistant whose English is immaculate. And if you have anything else to discuss, you can do so in the Forum.
Give my love to the city, Ron

All around design

Globalisation is one of the key issues of our time, but I never considered its relationship to design. The exhibition Global Design at the Museum of Design shows the effect that globalisation has had on architecture, graphics, media, fashion, products and industrial design since 1970. Maybe here I will find out why product names change and how trends emerge? I also never turn down an event where I can see works by Fischli/Weiss. Guided tours in English are available on request.
From Thursday until 30.5, Museum of Design

Fresh laundry

Did you know that stand-up comedian Rich Hall was Matt Groening's inspiration for the The Simpsons character Moe Szlysak? Rich Hall – who is also David Letterman’s two-time Emmy Award-winning scriptwriter – is coming to Alte Börse this Friday for an exclusive Funny Laundry show. Expect the unexpected.
Friday 8 pm, Alte Börse

Spring exhibition

Looking out of the window, I think spring seems far away. White snowflakes instead of green budding trees. Still, Maria van Rensen hosts her annual spring exhibition at her fashion atelier, featuring ceramic designer Therese Müller and jewellery designers Katrin Lucas and Simone Gugger . For the first time, the displayed works include joint projects such as textile bracelets with handmade clasps. If you already have plans on Friday, you can also stop by the atelier on Saturday or Sunday.
Friday 5 pm, Gablerstrasse 41

Great Gatsby

Two friends of mine, Katie and Carolyn, are celebrating their 20th birthdays this Saturday and ask for your company. Join them at Kanu Club in Niederdorf and bring some tipple. Put on your dandiest zoot suit, headband and top it off with feather boas and pearls. Remember the entrance code word – Gatsby – and you're in for a roaring party.
Saturday 8 pm, Schipfe 33b

Valentine's special

Remember those parties during high school? The ones that usually took place in the cellar or the garage, and slow dancing was always the highlight? At least, that’s the way it worked here in Switzerland. The Slow Dance Disco remembers these teenage soirées, and it’s their goal to fill the city with love for Valentine's Day. The Talacker Bar awaits you with balloons and love cake by Nina. Six djs ensure that music d'amour fills the space.
Saturday 10 pm, Talacker Bar

Dubliners

Langstrasse has a new intercultural attraction – Dublin Clubbin . Sascha Plebis, who calls himself the Swiss ambassador for Irish underground music, will turn Cocuna Club into a Celtic clubbing fortress every six weeks. It starts this Friday with a proper label night. PS – if you join their Facebook group, you can win free tickets.
Saturday 10 pm, Cocuna Club

Cats and Dogs

This Sunday, Xenix screens The Truth About Cats and Dogs (USA, 1996). It's more a chick flick, but if you join your girlfriend you get to watch Uma Thurman on the big screen. A great programme for a cold Sunday.
Sunday 5 pm, Xenix

Good to know

You may have wondered what all the slightly uncomfortable figures are smiling about on those large posters around town. On 7 March, Zurich elects the 9 members of the City Council, including its President, who will stay in office for four years. But didn't we just elect Corinne Mauch as President? Yes we did, but it was an out-of-term election because the former President left. The locals have twenty people to choose from. Each of the 9 elected members will become head of a department. At the same time, there is also the election of the District Council from the twelve districts of Zurich. If you ever fancy watching Swiss politicians at work, you can go as a viewer to the Rathaus. The District Council usually meets there every Wednesday from 5 pm.

Weeknight affair

It’s been five years since Self Taut’s last album, but the wait was worth it for Love's Been Discontinued. Chris Cacavas still plays alternative rock, but the sound has become softer and less country, gaining a psychedelic undertone. He comes to El Lokal with Paul Armfield, the master of bittersweet folk noir. Sigh!
Monday 8.20 pm, El Lokal

Time for soccer

Before the game is after the game. This Tuesday, the Champions League Game AC Milan vs. ManU is screened in several bars, including Revier, Hafenkneipe and Bombay, all small but great bars in Kreis 4.
Tuesday 8 pm, all around the world
