Exhibition

Smart Zurich: I saw them for the first time on bins and street lampposts in autumn 2007 – white stickers with questions about reason and being, signed by Aktion für ein kluges Zürich (mission for a smart Zurich). The campaign grown and grown and now exhibits at Mad from 9 July to 14 August. You'll see new questions and get a chance to meet the face behind it all. The opening is this Thursday featuring DJ Painkiller.
Thursday 7 pm, Mad

Open air cinema

Floating flicks: From 8-26 July the pool area at Untere Letten hosts Filmfluss, an open-air cinema with movies shown on a 70-square-metre screen. The programme lists a different film for each night, including The Bucket List, Layer Cake and Transamerica among 16 others. Films are presented in their original language with German and French subtitles. My tips: dress warm, choose a seat under the roof, be there early.
8-26 Jul 9.30 pm, Filmfluss

Design

Summer house now: You may have heard of the trailer project in Zurich-Binz, where, since April, creatives can rent ateliers. DesignContainer is part of this project and functions as a gallery for young designers. This Friday sees the opening of Sommerhaus jetzt, which exhibits swim fashion and a film in Super 8 by the fashion label Strandbad Osterburg.
Friday, 6 pm, DesignContainer

Party

Surprise night tour: Sumpf On Tour organises parties with the scheme: Give us your venue for free and we’ll bring the music and the crowd. This Friday the chosen locale is Ali's Fass at Sihlfeldstrasse 89 (near Lochergut) which is small but comes with a garden. Galopp play live, supported by djs Russel Quinn and Inder Rock vs Kennedy Space Center.
Friday 11 pm, Ali's Fass

Sporting life

Ping-Pong: At Kaufleuten on Saturday you can prove that you’ve still got what it takes when it comes to ping-pong. Lists of djs provide the necessary rhythm and each team gets to play at least three times. Afterwards head to Rimini's pool party (open to the public) where a fab line-up supplies the perfect background to Alex Dallas’ and Marlene Meier's wedding.
Saturday 2 pm, Kaufleuten
Saturday 7 pm, Rimini

Music

Blue Veins: Blue Veins was founded in Brooklyn NY by Zurich-based Niklaus Gehring Daniel and Laura Daniel. The married couple has been making music together for more than ten years and founded their own band last year. This Wednesday, together with Adrian Weyermann, Pim Nieuwlands and Simon Kaufmann, they indulge in bitter-sweet melancholy melodies at Bäckeranlage.
Wednesday 8 pm, Bäckeranlage

Good to know

Bathing history: In the warmer weather, many of us head to public bathing areas on lakes and rivers. The history of public baths stretches back to the first century when Romans built one near Zurich's Limmat for travellers who crossed the Alps. Full public nudity was common until early 1800s but, a hundred years later, swimming costumes were de rigueur and men and women had separate bathing areas. With the reformation public baths were perceived as a moral threat, however, come the 19th century, as population density increased, doctors pleaded for better public hygiene. Several pool areas were built within the city, many of whose original features or buildings are still preserved today. Of these, the men's lido dates back the furthest (built 1864) followed by the women's (built in 1888). But Zurich's prudishness continued until 1942, when the city council tried to ban two-piece swimsuits and was unsuccessful due to protests by members of the textile industry. In 1962, the first Bond girl, the Swiss Ursula Andress, wowed audiences in her cream coloured bikini and set the fashion for years to come. Unfortunately, some believe that none of our lidos can compete with a genuine beach. Concierge.com lists the World's Sexiest Beaches and describes 16 dream destinations where "free-spirited hippie chicks", "surf bums", "fake-dreadlocked hippie kids" and other beautiful people enjoy the sun. I’d like to join them right now...

Web

Sporty shorts: The Olympic Museum and Base-Court are hosting a contest for short films. Young directors from Switzerland, Brazil, Spain and China have created their shorts – all inspired by the Olympic movement. Eight films are being shown on the website and you can vote until 13 July. I really enjoyed Completition by Zurich-based Ari Zehnder (I gave it the full five stars).

Eating

Big fish: Fischstube at Zürichhorn harks back to a long tradition of fish and seafood cuisine. The restaurant’s design has many rustic features such as a bungalow with a thatched roof (the only such example in town). It’s the perfect summer choice for fresh fishy delicacies combined with a beautiful lakeside location.
