Design

Weekend walks: have never been so stylish. The area around Langstrasse has undergone more changes than Madonna. The result is a quarter of the city that’s as colourful as it is diverse. Alongside the strip bars and sex shops, new design studios, architectural offices and galleries have sprung up, and around 60 of them  are open for visitors this weekend for Kreislauf 4+5 – a series of walks around this part of Zurich. Just grab a guide and follow the red arrows.
Sat & Sun, Langstrasse

Party night

Legends and the latest: sounds at two of the city’s clubs this Saturday night/Sunday morning. At Zukunft, self-proclaimed “techno icon” German DJ Hell plays a set from his new release Devil’s Work. If you want techno with a spattering of electro, then head to Stall 6 where the foyer hosts newcomer Matt Star along with The Dose from Berlin, Wandler and resident DJ Pat Patrisha.
Saturday midnight, Zukunft
Saturday midnight, Stall 6

Film

Weighty issues: The winner of  this year’s Visions du Réel documentary festival, the French/English film  L'Encerclement talks to renowned intellectuals and uses their analysis to draw a portrait of neoliberal ideology and the way it is used to dictate policy and culture in societies across the world. Director Richard Brouillette speaks to philosophers like Noam Chomsky and Ignacio Ramonet, and actress Susan George. Catch it at Riffraff.
Sunday 7 pm, Riffraff

Sale on Sunday

Sushi and rare finds: If you want to satisfy your lust for shopping and eating then head to the Japanese restaurant Ginger, on Seefeldstrasse this Sunday. CHF 55 per person may sound pricey, but you’ll get 7 courses plus tea/coffee and a Prosecco in included in the offer. Book ahead, as it gets busy! Vintage goods are on sale too – if you want to get rid of your spare change after your feast.
Sunday from 11 am, Ginger

Comedy

Hot stuff: Crumbs is a stand-up improv comedy duo from Canada who take to the stage at Papiersaal on Kalanderplatz at the start of the week. On this, their third visit to Zurich, actors Steve Sim and Lee White are joined on Monday by local theatresports troupe EIT for a night of theatrical duelling. On Tuesday they embark on a dramatic journey through their improv firework show.
Mon & Tues 8 pm, Papiersaal

Good to know

Water sports: Okay, so we’re not basking on the coast of Mediterranean, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the water. At destinations along Lake Zurich there are different types of water sports to choose from – and learning them on a lake might just provide a safer way to learn than if you were faced with sea dangers like strong currents, dangerous winds, sharks, jellyfish etc!
Surfing: Although wave-riding may not seem possible in Zurich, over the last few years a number of Limmatwave campaigners have lobbied to create an artificial wave in the city’s largest river. Their plans seem ambitious but they’re gaining new support all the time. Rowing: The Seeclub Zurich and the Belvoir Rowing Club (for women) are both near the city end of the lake and cater to all levels. Waterskiing/wakeboarding: Adrenalin addicts might fancy a trip from Zurich to Wollishofen. Find out more at HB Adventures. Canoeing/kayaking: The Ruderclub and Kanuclub, both canoe/kayak on the Limmat and the lake, and have information on renting a canoe for the day. Sailing: James Bond fans'll get their kicks on a speedboat at Luna Sailing while those who take life at a more gentle pace might try learning on a sailboat from Segelschule Zwick, where you can sail around Küsnacht.

Web

War fair: As countries like China Russia and Turkey race to get arms, this reportage from Monocle takes a look at the IDEX fair in Abu Dhabi, where armed forces and security services from nations all over the world go to see the latest in tanks and guns and put in their orders.

Eating

Brunch bunch: Traditional brunch spot Bohemia is a favourite among Zurich locals, not least because it’s open on Sundays with a menu that satisfies the need for fry-ups. It’s a decade since the Cuba-inspired eaterie first opened its doors and it's hosting regular Cuba Weeks to celebrate, with concerts and culture. Those who like their hangovers smoke-free will appreciate the no-smoking policy.

Sat & Sun 9 am – 4 pm
