Top of the pops

Music from Zurich: alongside the newsletter, I also publish a monthly online guide to the city – however I’m afraid it’s only in German, sorry! This issue is dedicated to Zurich's music scene and features interviews with connoisseurs of various scenes within the city. They also recommend their favourite songs by a Zurich band or DJ from which I have compiled a playlist. Have a look at Restorm to download the chosen tunes.
Thank you for the music and give my love to the city,
Ron

Fashion sample

Ready to wear: we’ll probably have to wait a bit longer before spring arrives but I assume it's never too soon for ladies to start reorganising their wardrobe. This Thursday, Kazu holds a sample sale at her store & atelier with silk dresses and accessories at excellent prices. Kazu was raised in both Japan and Switzerland which probably explains why her label is heavily influenced by Japanese themes in terms of patterns, style and aesthetics.
Thursday, 5.30 pm Kazu

Pop electronica

How Much Peanut Butter: the band Electric Blanket was just voted Top Swiss Band of the month by DRS 3. Their sound evolved from being inspired by electronica to a unique strain of pop which they call a mix of indie, lo-fi and synth-pop. Is it just me or does every music genre seem to breed subgenres lately? No matter, I like their tunes. This Thursday they play at Stall 6, followed by the Round Table Knights (DJ Questionmark und DJ Atomik).
Thursday 9.30 pm, Stall 6

Electronic tunes

Party time: hiphop-electronic "wonder child" Daedelus from LA and, together with his wife Laura Darlington, his singer/ songwriter project The Long Lost are coming to Zukunft this Friday. At the same time, the final Party Garantie takes place at Embargo with the crème de la crème of Zurich’s electronic DJ scene.
Friday 11 pm, Zukunft & Embargo

Reggae sound

Cool running: Stall 6 presents the full reggae range from ska to current dancehall from Jamaica and includes the best from Africa under the title Cool Ruler; this Saturday with Mighty - Timeless Sound from Gambia and Berlin.
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

Cinema

Cinematic Monday: cinema ticket prices seem to just keep going up and up (I paid 19 francs yesterday!) so its' good to know that on Mondays you generally pay just 12 francs. I recommend The Times of Harvey Milk, a biopic about the first openly gay American politician, starring Sean Penn, who won an Oscar for his portrayal.
Monday, various cinemas

Midweek affair

Acoustic guitar or funky electro pop: this month, Charles Wallace, the American troubadour, is the house guest at La Catrina, meaning he plays music from his new album every Tuesday in March (free entry!). This Tuesday check out Polarkreis 18 from Germany at Abart.
Tuesday 9 pm, La Catrina
Tuesday 8 pm, Abart

Good to know

National sports: as I mentioned before, spring showed it's warm face briefly over the weekend but has disappeared again. So I thought to introduce you to some local indoor sports which have the twin advantage of being indoors, obviously, while allowing you to drink and hang out with your friends at the same time. Kegeln: Is the Swiss equivalent of bowling but with nine pins, slightly heavier bowls and without funny shoes. There are various places to try this sport, but most original bowling alleys are located in the cellars of restaurants. Jassen: Is a game of cards similar to spades. If you tend to visit traditional restaurants you've probably seen 4 people playing cards quietly and discussing loudly after every round. According to Wikipedia, 3 million Swiss play this game regularly, which is basically half the population of Switzerland. So ask any Swiss person you know about the rules and he or she can most likely introduce you to this game. Otherwise (or if you already know how to play) check out Zurich's Jass derby this Saturday at 1 pm at Johanniter. Teams can enrol on the website. Poker: is not a truly national sport in Switzerland but this card game has become more and more popular over the years and Bling hosts a poker night every Tuesday from 7 pm.

Bikes

Bike parts: on Sunday you can find spare parts, gear and whole bikes at the flea market at Rote Fabrik. Or do you think you own a truly great bike? Then you can nominate your bike as the most beautiful in Zurich. The ten most beautiful bikes are exhibited at the flea market and a jury declares Zurich’s most beautiful bike.
Sunday 10 am, Aktionshalle

Web

The Simpsons: I'm aware that I already mentioned The Simpsons in last week's newsletter but you’ll forgive when you see this video clip describing Homer's evolution, it’s just too funny! And if you want to give your German a go, read the NZZ's explanation (in honour of The Simpson's 20th birthday) of why it's the best series ever made.
Daily 6.10 pm / 6.40 pm, Pro7
