Furniture design

Multifunctional: Sitio, an exhibition space for design, arts and professional crafts, is currently showcasing the works of the Swiss furniture design label schindlersalmerón. The brand’s latest innovation is three-legged triangular stackable stools in silver, white or black aluminium. Sitio is always open from Thursday to Saturday
Until 18 May, Sitio

Open minded parties

Offstream vs Russia: Friday offers two rather alternative events. The Offstream DJ collective plays for gays, lesbians and friends at Stall 6, while the squat at Kalkbreite gives us Moscow-on-the-Sihl with Russian pop, punk and rock and plenty of vodka.
Friday 11 pm, Stall 6
Friday 10 pm, Kalkbreite Squat

Demonstrate against nothing

All for nothing: The Urban Prankster Network is organising an important new action - a demonstration against nothing. If you want to take part, just be at the meeting point at the Landesmuseum this Saturday with empty banners and signs- there won't be any messages displayed. Who can take part? Anyone and no one. Why? No reason.
Saturday, 1.30 pm, Landesmuseum

Oscar night

And the winner is: Sunday night, all eyes will be on L.A. as the coveted trophies are awarded. Will Switzerland’s Reto Caffi receive an Oscar for Best Short Film? Watch the ceremony live at Razzia with members of Caffi’s film crew or at home on Pro 7. Meanwhile, if you fancy calling a movie prop your own, head to Altstetten where Movieprops are auctioning off everything from a bust of the Terminator to a Star Wars light saber.
Sunday 2 pm, Movieprops
Sunday 12 am, Razzia

Wintersleep

Summer will come: Zurich often goes weeks without a glimpse of blue sky during winter, and even though this year’s weather is a different story altogether, the cold still makes me want to stay in bed. Fortunately the Canadian band Wintersleep are playing their energetic pop and soul at Hafenkneipe this Tuesday. That should wipe all thought of hibernation from my mind.
Tuesday 8.30 pm, Hafenkneipe

Midweek affair

Find your sweetheart: The evening Find Your Schatz Afterwork is for people over 28 who're either looking for a partner or just happen to like soul, disco, funk and rock. Instead of asking for money, the door staff will give you a sticker: green if you’re single or red if you’re taken. The event takes place at Das Haus and starts at 6 pm with DJ Miss Heidi.
Tuesday 6 pm, Das Haus

Good to know

Fast food II: As promised, here’s the second part of my selection of take-away spots around the city. Crazy Potatoes: As the name implies, this stall just off Limmatplatz serves baked potatoes with various toppings, though its bestsellers are hash brown pizza and Raclette. A great change to your usual kebab shop. Longstreet Grill, Sonne Grill, Würstli-Shop: Longstreet Grill (Langstrasse 92) specialises in sausages while Sonne (Hohlstrasse 32) concentrates on chicken and Würtsli-Shop (Hohlstrasse 25) on hamburgers, with a great onion sauce. Pepito Snack: Open since 1976, this take-away in the Niederdorf was probably the first in Zurich. Many other stalls serve Pepitos but none do it as well as the original. The real Pepito was my first love and it will be my last. Calypso and Alexander: Both found between Central and Rudolf-Brun-Brücke. Alexander is known for homemade cheese pies and Calypso for curry sausages. My tip: add a bit of ketchup to the curry sauce and it'll be the best you've ever had. Libanon ILAchdar: This stall behind the main station (Hefnerstrasse 13) serves the best alternatives to kebabs. The so-called sandwiches are amazing, pita bread filled with lamb, chicken, beef or meat balls - mmmh! Rössli: Is it a take-away? A restaurant? A bar? Nobody knows, nobody cares, as long as it offers the perfect fish & chips with fish from the lake of Zurich, served with a homemade tomato-caper-sauce. You’ll find it at the corner of Geroldstrasse/Hardstrasse.

Tokyo photo trip

Danny Choo: illuminates the streets of this vibrant metropolis in his Tokyo Photo Walk. Fascinating insights into this city with its own architecture, signs and logic. Makes me want to book a plane ticket right away!

Simpsons intro

Simpsons: I recently found out that The Simpsons have a new intro-sequence. How many differences can you spot? As a reminder, here are two take-offs of the original: one with human actors and one with an all-Lego cast.
