Zurich (EN) : Thursday, 27.11.08: Whisky, Cuban rhythms & mice on drugs

   International Ron
New York, New York: the city that never sleeps. With so much going on, what could be better than having a weekly Ron Orp's Mail to give you the word on the street? Tell your friends in the Big Apple about Thursday’s launch of the first Ron Orp's Mail in the US. Or maybe you’re a native who wants to keep in touch with your town? You can subscribe to Ron Orp’s NY edition on the website.
Give my love to the city,
Ron

 Art
Art Star cult: In her paintings, Dawn Mellor deconstructs celebrities from film, music and politics. Her painting style - which experts describe as a mix of underground trash, surrealism and pop art - reflects her black humour. Looking at the canvases, it might help to know that the artist once worked as an S&M cabaret performer, as the famous become grotesque through the eyes of a voyeur, murderer or stalker. The exhibition is at the migros museum (not part of the grocery shop!) from 27 Nov to 15 Feb. On Thursdays entry is always free after 5 pm.
Thursday 12-8 pm, migros museum
 Festival
A wee dram come true: The whisky ships have docked at Bürkliplatz every year for a decade now. To celebrate the anniversary, a broader range of goods including chocolate, teas and sparkling wines are all offered up to visitors for their own discerning taste test. I think I'm in heaven! Not only can I sample my way through the world’s best whisky and cigars, but also 250 different kinds of chocolate. There’s live music and slide shows, and inevitably a lot to please Scotland fans – however, ultimately, it’s all about the whisky and the whiskey. Cheers!
Thursday 4-11 pm, Bürkliplatz
 Gig
Gig Pop goes the girl: They’re both Swiss, yet that’s where the likeness between Heidi Happy and Heidi from the Alps starts and ends. The former Heidi’s look bears more than a passing resemblance to the 50s pin-up girl Bettie Page and the singer, aka Priska Zemp, plays acoustic folk-pop and sings in English. You'll enjoy her quirky sound if you like Feist, Emiliana Torrini or Laura Veirs. I have two pairs of tickets give away for her show at Kaufleuten.
Friday 8 pm, Kaufleuten

 Party
Techno time: Minimalarchitektur organises a special event at Rohstofflager. Several live acts and DJs play the latest electro, techno, house and minimal tracks supported by visuals and projections of the architecture of Zurich's nightlife venues – there’s also an unlikely side act - comedy from Swiss stand-up Sean Byron (in German). Some musical highlights: Fiji from Berne, Wandler from Zurich, Agnes from Geneva, Gebr. Teichmann and Alice from Berlin and Paris.
Saturday 10 pm, Rohstofflager
 Weekday affair I
Weekday affair I Cuban rhythms: Orishas combination of hip hop, salsa, son, rumba and soul is infectious and, in my opinion, is one of the best medicines for winter blues. The three Cuban exiles are playing their latest album "Cosita Blues" at x-tra. Monday’s already sold out, but there are still some tickets left for their second concert on Tuesday.
Tuesday 9.30 pm, x-tra
 Weekday affair II
I heart NY: In honour of the newly-launched Ron Orp's Mail here’s a film portrait of NY. The documentary Cinemania introduces five New Yorkers who run from one film to the next. Their ultimate goal is to see as many films as possible, a passion which requires careful planning. The film from 2002 is shown at Filmstelle with great shots of the cityscape.
Tuesday 8 pm, Filmstelle
 Good to know
Good to know Sweet tooth: I don't know how you feel but when winter comes I get a serious craving for sugar. So here some tips for candy connoisseurs. Lolipop: with branches all over city is a paradise for those who love their gum sweets. You can make your own individual selection from every imaginable colour and shape. MyKugelhopf: is a new food blog in English that focuses mainly on Zurich and also includes other parts of Switzerland. Kerrin Rousset shares food stories that also include advice on where to buy special chocolate, as well as some great dessert recipes. DIY: An easy online recipe with instructions on how to make your own gum candies that look like Lego. Chocolate heaven: In Zurich, the super-kitsch Teuscher shops, and Sprüngli and Merkur are probably the best known places for a huge selection of sweets. If this isn’t enough to sate your choc lust, there’s a direct public transport route straight to the Lindt & Sprüngli factory in Kilchberg, where you can visit the chocolate museum and gorge your senses with as much chocolate as you like.
 Web
Web Mickey Mouse on drugs: Take a look inside the brains of mice on drugs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favour of animal testing - these mice are animated. Each mouse is high on a different kind of party drug (Ecstasy, cocaine, alcohol...). It’s more fun to watch their behaviour when they’re in a group, rather than the actual scientific explanation.
 Eating
Gee up: Located near Zurich’s main station and just next to the theatre Gessnerallee, the restaurant Reithalle makes a feature of elements of the past, when the building belonged to the military. The former horse stable is an open-plan space with long tables and serves a seasonal, international menu with lots of choices for vegetarians. A good start to the night if you plan to go to Stall 6, the club just next door.
