Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 5.2.09: Slums, beer & lots of films

People’s choice music

Your best piece: Take a trip down memory lane and bring your favourite vinyl (only) to Helsinki for DJs Navok and Sanfilippo to spin on their turntables. You’ll even be allowed to introduce it with a few words – and English is as welcome as German.
Thursday 8 pm, Helsinki

Disco electro

Speaking of reminiscing: Erobique (International Pony) from Hamburg is the comfort food of disco parties, who doesn’t just get you dancing, but laughing and reminiscing as well. Playing live this Friday at Stall 6, he is followed by the well-rehearsed DJ team Rumory & Dust Surfers.
Friday 10 pm, Stall

Film night

Very long film night: Theater Neumarkt and Les Vidoes present their first long film night, with the theme 'I'm a spy'. Three classics of the agent genre (Torn Curtain, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and The Spy Who Came from the Cold) plus one whose identity has not yet been revealed. Including the commentary as well as (we can only hope) some breaks, you won't leave the theatre before dawn - and with a sore bum. All films are shown in English.
Saturday 10 pm, Theater Neumark

Rock music

Songwriters unite: Rock history icons, Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby, come to el Lokal this Sunday. Eric’s 1977 debut single Whole Wide World brought him into the public eye and his CDs from the 90s with his band Le Beat Group Electronic ought to be in every record collection around the globe. And Amy, known as pop's sweetest cynic, came to fame in the early 80s as a member of the New York cow punk band The Last Roundup.
Sunday 8.20 pm, el Lokal

Film afternoon

Dog Day Afternoon: The Oscar-winning film from 1975 starring (such a young!) Al Pacino is back on screen at Filmpodium. The story: Sonny and Sal hold up a bank, only to find that most of the cash has been picked up for the day. But the place is already surrounded by the police force. Easy, simple, classic—and what beats a classic on large screen on a Sunday afternoon?
Sunday 5 pm, Filmpodium

Indie rock

Two metropolises: Half London, half New York, the Five O'clock Heroes play indie rock evocative of The Jam, The Police and Elvis Costello. The band returns to Hafenkneipe after two years this Tuesday. Their single Who, featuring model Agyness Deyn, will be part of the programme but unfortunately, she won't be at the concert herself. It's a shame, but the four guys are also worth a listen.
Tuesday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Good to know

Ale, lager, stout: More and more small and micro breweries are creating their own beer in Zurich these days. So for a true local taste, here’s a selection. I hope I didn't miss any. The most common: Turbinenbräu started producing in 1997, so it's already something like a classic. Its 3 main beers are Sprint (lager), Start (sweetish) and Rekord (dark). Bier Paul now produces 7 kinds of beers, ranging from traditional lager to rye beer and ale, including seasonal specials. Ron's favourites: Amboss produces the nicest dark beer in town, as even people who swear that they're not into dark beers will attest. If you’re afraid of new experiences and just don’t trust me, they also have a lager. Goldküstenbräu is from down the lake but too good not to mention; refreshing and perfect for BBQs. Less known: In my exhaustive research I found some Zurich beers I've never tried before: Hirnibräu, Züri-Hell (a vague recollection from Zurich-Fest) and Stammheimer Hopfenbräu. To order beer: From the tap, beer comes in three sizes. If you ask for 'es Hergöttli' you get 2.5 dl, for 'e Stange' 3 dl (standard) and for 'es Grosses' 5 dl (which would be standard in the UK).

Web

The places we live: This website offers new insights into the slums of the world. A Magnum photographer from Norway lived in the poor parts of Jakarta, Caracas, Nairobi and Mumbai and let the inhabitants talk. The French photographer and artist JR took pictures of people who live in Kibera, the slum region of Nairobi, Kenya. He enlarged the photos to about 100 square metres and stuck them on the roofs of the slum and the local trains. So now on Google Earth, you see people looking and smiling at you. Great art!

Eating

Opening: Last month the Wohnzimmerbar opened its doors just next to RiffRaff at Neugasse 75. True to its name, it’s small and cosy and the atmosphere familiar. The area in the back normally sports one large table but can also be booked for a party of up to 10 people for a customised dinner. For all other empty stomachs the menu lists a single dish each day which may be Thai, pasta or anything else the cook fancies. They serve a killer Margarita and as soon as it's a bit warmer also punch (which we Swiss love!).
