Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 8.1.09: Ice Age, poker & video messages

 Live at Hive
Live at Hive Munk not Monk: Mathias Modica is the man behind the German band Munk (not to be confused with the neurotic TV detective Monk). Last June, his second release Cloudbuster was Groove’s album of the month. This Thursday at Hive, let Munk's melodramatic electronic pop songs remind you of summertime and the 70s. Expect lots of pianos, flutes, old synths and drum machines.
Thursday 10 pm, Hive
 Film night
The magic 7: Will Smith stars as Ben Thomas in Seven Pounds. Ben, who has killed 7 people (including his wife) in a car crash, tries to atone for his sins by giving his material possessions and even his body parts to 7 worthy people. His plan unravels when he falls in love with one of them. I have some film tickets to give away (no strings attached).
Thursday at Abaton, Arena and Corso

 Post pop
Post pop Newcomer: James Gruntz, a young Basel-based band, hold their album release party at Razzia this Friday. The singer, also called James Gruntz, describes the band’s style as post pop that touches the masses without being reduced to one genre and that negates the capitalism of the current pop scene. Those who watched the Euro Cup games at Razzia will have heard the band.
Friday 9 pm, Razzia
 Electronic sound
"Beam me up, Scotty": Cocuna, which opened its doors just last year, is quite the all-purpose venue: the lounge on the first floor (open every morning from 9 am) turns into a club at 10 pm from Thursday to Saturday. This Friday, the club hosts Starship night for the second time. Free entry for the electronic sounds of DJs The Starshiptroopers featuring Luke Redford & RjDj.
Friday 10 pm, Cocuna
 Soul, reggae, dub
Soul, reggae, dub Jamaican music à la French: Moods at Schiffbau is the place to be if you like jazz and soul. This Saturday the French soul, reggae and dub band The Dynamics play songs from their album Version Excursion. Released in October 2007, it’s their only album to date, and the sound is still as unique as it was back then. Supported by Ali Baba Sound (7.30 pm) and Rude Music Selection (midnight).
Saturday 8.30 pm, Moods
 Techno punk
Explosive sounds: Daniel Gossweiler, better known as Sexomodular, combines fresh techno with raw punk, a style which he calls extreme synthesizing. The show looks and sounds explosive, maniacal and very funny. Along with Sexomodular, see DJ Philip Bader from Berlin behind the desks at Stall 6 for the first time, and notorious DJs Comini and Pat Patrisha.
Saturday midnight, Stall 6
 Good to know
Good to know Ice Age: It's cold and we’re expecting even lower temperatures. So let me offer some tips on how to make the most of winter. Ice rinks: The Dolder ice rink is charming with warm yellow lighting, music and the surrounding forest. While Heuried and Oerlikon offer decent and usually less crowded ice-skating opportunities, the seasonal ice rink at Zürichhorn is very romantic with the city lights and the lake in the background. Bavarian curling: If you like Boccia and Boule, you’ll love Bavarian curling, which involves throwing a stick as precisely as possible. You can compare your skills with others on the Dolder ice rink (register beforehand). Ice hockey: All ice rinks (Dolder, Heuried, Oerlikon) are also open in the evening for some spontaneous hockey (Chneble, as the locals call it). All you need is a hockey stick, which you can hire, and then off you go. Skiing: The closest ski lift to Zurich, in Regensberg, is also the lowest in Switzerland. The City-Lift is operated by the farmer family Lanz. Check ahead to make sure it's running (044 853 03 78), even if there's a lot of snow. I recommend visiting it only in bad weather as the 260 m long slope is jammed with children most of the time. Coffee with Schnaps (Kafi Fertig) is included in your ticket.
Break a leg and enjoy!
 Weeknight affair
Weeknight affair Las Vegas in Zurich: Every Monday and Tuesday is poker night at Bling. The last finale of the so-called Killerblatt Series had participants from California, Brazil, Sweden and Switzerland - very international! Best to register in advance, as especially the Monday evenings are often sold out.
Mon & Tue 7 pm, Bling
