Send a surprise

New friends need to know: As someone who’s out and about, strutting the streets of our city,
I seem to meet new people all the time. If you’re anything like me then you might want to pass on the knowledge about Ron Orp’s Mail to those folks that you meet along the way. After all, where’s the fun in keeping it a secret? If you e-mail this newsletter to 5 friends you could win tickets to Saturday’s Long Night of the Hotel Bars - see below for more - where you can play “the host with the most (freebies)”

Just e-mail 5 friends this newsletter and copy [email protected] into the CC.

Give my love to the city,

Ron

Politicians: You just can’t get away from them this week, so if you can’t ignore 'em, then at least you can get a different perspective on their work at the Head to Head exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung. This poster collection shows epic electoral campaigns featuring Lenin, Che Guevara, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Yulia Tymoshenko.

Thursday, 7 pm Museum für Gestaltung

Party On

Indie night: Don’t know about you but sometimes I simply need a rest from Zurich’s dance scene to appreciate music by bands once in a while. I've heard people say that Thursday is the new Saturday, so with this in mind I might just head down to Alte Metzg on Langstrasse where DJ Rocketaro is spinning some of the great and good, new and old indie tunes.

Thursday, 9 pm Alte Metzg Bar

Music festival

Hmm…smooth: Get down and groove at this weekend's jazznojazz festival which runs until Saturday night at two of the city's lesser frequented venues, the Gessnerallee Theatre and ewz-Unterwerk Selnau. Skye Edwards (formerly of Morcheeba fame), the Dave Holland Quintet and Brooklyn Funk Essentials are all on the the programme, so don your black polo-neck and sample some smooth sounds while you sip on a sophisticated cosmopolitan cocktail.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 7.30 pm

Event

For late night loungers: For the fifth time the Long Night of Hotel Bars takes place in Zurich. Similar to the Long Night of Museums, each of the 11 participating hotels hosts a special programme: Jazz at the Alden, house and party tunes at the Dolder Grand etc… Don’t miss the Harry Potter-style candle lighting which accompanies live piano at the Eden au Lac, poker at the Mariott and karaoke at the Plattenhof. I have tickets to give away, so just send me an e-mail.

Saturday 9 pm, 11 varied hotels e-mail for tickets

Film

Just like the old days: The Alfred Hitchcock series continues at Filmpodium with three silent movies, The Lodger, The Ring and Downhill, all accompanied by the British pianist Neil Brand, who's been performing regularly in London and at film festivals around the world. He's considered to be one of the finest exponents of improvised silent film music and he's giving a seminar on the ups and downs of his 25-year career in this unusual profession.

Sunday, from midday Filmpodium

Concert

Alright: Oh yes, it most certainly is, because… we are young, we are free and we keep our teeth nice and clean. Or at least that's what we were and what we did in the 90s. If you’ve no idea what I’m rambling about then you’ll most likely want to give the concert by Supergrass a miss. If you're a fan and would rather catch them live rather than just pumping on your stereo, then the anthemic English indie band plays Zurich’s Abart. (That's an end to the puns now!)

Monday, 8 pm Abart

Good to know

English books and bookshops: A few years ago it was difficult to find English literature in the city, except for the one establishment in the city centre. But now there are several. Orell Füssli: Is the classic with English books on three floors at its central location at Bahnhofstrasse. The Travel Bookshop: I love the clutter and the seemingly chaotic layout of this shop. As the name suggests it deals mainly in travel literature - not exclusively English - but still a good place to browse. Buchhaus: Is the bookshop in Sihlcity which includes a large English section. Pile of books: Is the newcomer in this group, a rather small but well-stocked bookshop that just sells English books. Generally, most bookshops have a smaller or larger English section to keep up with the growing international population in this oh-so-cosmopolitan city.

Midweek affair

The race to the finish: Time to breathe a sigh of relief as we finally reach the end of months of speculation. The US Presidential Election is set to run on all day and night and will keep followers on the edge of their seats. If you’re in for the long haul, head to Nordbrücke, grab yourself a Stange or two and watch the full event on a big screen. It’s just the right place for those who prefer a low-key environment on politically neutral ground.

Tuesday, 9 pm Nordbrücke

Eating

Bounty from the waves: Unfortunately, I often find that seafood is a bit disappointing in land-locked countries. But one great exception to this rule here in our very own landlubbers' paradise, is the Brasserie Lipp which serves some of the best shellfish in the city. They also specialise in cold dishes of fish – delicious for starters or a light lunchtime meal. More traditional fancies come in the form of choucroute – sauerkraut cooked and served with meat.
