Zurich (EN) : Thursday, 23.10.08: Ron's party, open mic & wi-fi

Party hearty

This Thursday I’m hosting a party: My friends re-opened the Razzia, which used to be a cinema but was shut down more than 20 years ago and will use this great venue four days a week for cultural events. So let's celebrate! The public pre-opening party starts at 8 pm with concerts featuring Ian "Hippiekacke" Constable, Mr. Soul and Tinguely de Chnächt. We invite you to drinks and appetizers before the event, from 6.30 pm.

See you there and don’t forget to give my love to the city,

Ron

Photo exhibition

Melting away: Glaciers are majestic white tongues of ice, meandering through valleys. They’re familiar images found in traditional paintings and tourism brochures. Georg Aerni’s photos focus on the glacier's natural beauty and run in parallel to the discussion about global climate change. His exhibition is at the Gallerie Bob Gysin.

Friday, 6 pm Gallerie Bob Gysin

Film exhibition

Super 8: Helmhaus Zurich is showing films and videos made by the Swiss artist Roman Signer since 1975. The exhibition “ Projections” reveals his melancholy existential oeuvre showing recent and familiar works including his first Super 8 films. The artist turned seventy this year and finally receives some long-overdue recognition with this, the first ever extensive and exclusive presentation of Signer's filmed stunts.
Friday, 12 pm Helmhaus

Country concert

Country trash: Dos Hermanos sing about drinking coffee, urban phobias and girls, of course. They tip a wink at country clichés and cover (or rather interpret) classics from White Hassle, Leadbelly and Trio. The music, a mix of country and trash in German and English, sounds a bit corny - but makes you smile.

Partying has never been cheaper, but you have to be at least 26 to enter. I have five pairs of tickets to give away, just send me an e-mail to enter the draw.

Pop gig

Welcome to Zurich: Snotty Cheekbones are playing at Casablanca. They’re from Winterthur – which is actually a ‘proper’ city (at least by Swiss standards) despite claims from Zurich’s locals who seem to think it’s a village. The small-ish bar organises occasional concerts which are but always well frequented. Entrance for free – that’s even cheaper than the Superdiscount party!
Saturday, 9 pm Casablanca

Open mic

Raise the curtain: Ms. Brandy's Open Mic is a chance for you and me to perform what we want - poetry, music on the last Sunday of every month at the Bazillus Club. This time with special guest John Francis. It's free with collection afterwards.
Sunday, 8 pm Bazillus Club

Hotspots: Some of us are most productive working at the office while some beaver best within their own four walls – yet sometimes it's inspiring to break free and head to a fresh location, perhaps to a cafe to take advantage of their wi-fi wonders. Here some venues that offer hotspots: Kreis 1: Bar Nachtflug, Stüssihoffstatt 4. Kreis 3: Berta Bar, Bertastr. 26. Kreis 4: Cafe Casablanca, Langstr. 62, Kreis 5: Besame Mucho Bar, Pfingstweidstr. 6; Favorit, Konradstr. 49. Kreis 6: My Place, Hottingerstr. 4. All over the city: every Starbucks branch has a hotspot, though not for free. Internet cafés: My laptop often isn't where I am, so I'm glad I can check my e-mails at a few places: Quanta Virtual Fun Space, Limmatquai 94; Telefon-Corner, Shop-Ville, main station; Internet Cafe, Uranistrasse 3. Join the initative to make wi-fi free for everyone.

Quirk of nature

The human sound machine: Michael Wäckerlin merges talent with mechanics by transforming himself into The Human Jukebox – with just his voice, an iPod, speakers and a trusty helmet. Throw in a few francs and choose songs varying from Black Sabbath, to Frank Sinatra and Britney Spears. The background music comes from the iPod but his singing is all live, loud and delightfully lo-fi.

Eating

For you: The new bar für Dich just next to Bäckeranlage has already become a regular feature in the neighbourhood, especially the child-friendly Sunday brunches. This month the locale also organises concerts, featuring El Tigre Tanguero and Mission 4 (though that one is held at Stall 6) and a market for children's clothes and toys. It’s airy and comfy and if you don’t have any children, is also lovely for a nightcap.
