All New - My Favourite Arrivals On The Gastro Scene

Yes, May makes everything new. But as special and unique as it always presents itself, May isn't really that different, because in this city, there's always so much new to discover in the other 11 months as well. So you don't lose track, I've gathered here my favourite gastronomic openings of the last few months for you. I've already told you about some, others not yet.

After a longer renovation period, the Schlachthof Letzigrund reopened its doors at the end of April. From the outside, there are hardly any differences to be seen, but inside, the establishment presents itself in a new guise and under new management. The dishes are mostly local, regional, and seasonal, and the kitchen is open continuously from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm.

With «Bunzai Burger,» founder Mao has fulfilled a dream - and I noticed already with the first bite that someone here has been dealing with the topic of burgers for quite some time. In addition to the «Bunzai Classic» Smash Burger, I can also recommend the «Oklahoma Onion Smash» and the Korean-inspired «Bibim Shack Burger» at least 100%. By the way, in Japan, the exclamation «Bunzai» or Banzai is said to bring 10,000 years of joy and happiness - I hope the place does too.

When you think of train stations and food, takeaways are usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, the HB (Hauptbahnhof, main train station) is increasingly becoming a gastronomic hotspot - and the «Brasserie Süd» contributes a lot to that. Here, you can get really cozy in the semicircular sofas and enjoy excellent cuisine. By the way, Friday is Bouillabaisse day, and a new brunch awaits you every weekend.

Noah Rechsteiner was the youngest restaurateur in Zurich at the age of 19. But that was a while ago. After 3 pop-up restaurants, serving over 10,000 guests, and visiting a total of 20 restaurants, he has now found a permanent home for his Anoah since January at Rigiplatz. The concept of «Anoah»: 32 guests, 5 to 6 courses, and all plant-based.

During a lunchtime stroll recently, my hunger led me to a new Thai place: Thai Hunters at Wyssgasse 2. And it led me well, the food was perfect. At lunchtime, there are a few dishes to choose from (for takeaway or dine-in), from 2 pm onwards, à la carte cooking is available continuously until evening - and in a way that even Thais enjoy dining here.

When I take a trip to Winterthur, I like to grab a sandwich at Hasan's - hardly any local would disagree that they have the best in town. Recently, I only have to go as far as Oerlikon, where «Hasan's Sandwich» has opened a new branch. It's run by Hasan's sister, Elif. In addition to the sandwiches, the böreks and mezze plates are also a delight for the palate.

Last year, Zurich got a three-month pop-up taste of «Sando», and just a few weeks ago, the folks from Geneva settled into a permanent location in the Niederdorf. I'm very happy about it because the Japanese-inspired smash burgers will definitely find their way into my mouth and stomach more often from now on.

And just one more ex-pop-up that has given up the vagabond life and settled in permanently. At «555+», you get an authentic Thai street food experience from the kitchen to the interior, with colourful tablecloths, plastic plates, and chairs. The decor provides a playful contrast to the otherwise sleek design of the Greulich Design Hotel, where the restaurant is located.

When I was traveling in Japan years ago, I passed by a German bakery in Tokyo. There was a huge line of people in front of the store, all wanting to buy sourdough bread. And now, the opposite is happening in Zurich. Here, people are lining up in front of the Japanese micro-bakery «Tsugi» to buy Japanese milk bread «Shokupan». However, it's only available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting from 2 pm. But I highly recommend trying the other breads and treats as well. Itadakimasu (Let's eat)!

Sometimes I feel like going out alone for a coffee. But I sometimes feel a bit weird just sitting alone in the café. But now I've seen that there's a new jewellery café in Zurich. And I think that's the perfect place to go alone. At «Ellie,» you get a workspace, materials, instructions, and refreshments. And then you can get to work creating your own bracelet. I think that's a really nice idea for a café.

Beautiful cafes are fortunately not hard to find in District 3. But with beautiful cafes, it's like with good coffee: you can never have too much of it. That's why I was very excited when I discovered a new café on Badenerstrasse. The «Warung Kopi» celebrates Indonesian coffee culture (which is certainly not too widespread in the city). Those familiar with the Swiss coffee scene will be even more delighted because the owner, Milo, is a multiple Swiss coffee champion. On Thursdays, there's also lunch, and on Saturdays, an Indonesian brunch is served.
