We also have two actual rock ’n’ roll bands and, for the culture vultures among you, opera. And don’t forget, we have the penultimate Kreisflomi before it takes a summer break. I’ve got to be honest. i don’t really think about opera much but, when i do go, Iithoroughly enjoy it. And this weekend gives us all a great (and free) opportunity to check some out, as the Opernhaus is live broadcasting two productions: the ballet Romeo and Juliet on Friday and Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser on Saturday. The three-day programme ends on Sunday with an open-air performance of Dvořák’s 9th Symphony, as well as a selection of arias.

Ron’s Tip: Make sure you get there early to find a good spot and don’t forget the sunscreen!

I love firsts and I love niche sporting events. So we’re on a roll here if you’ll excuse the pun. This weekend’s International Roller Derby tournament in Zurich combines those two passions in the best possible way. On 27th and 28th June, the Roller Derby scene rolls into the city for the first tournament of its kind ever to be held here. If watching 22 millionaires kicking a bit of leather about has left you cold, this is your chance to watch something a little different. Expect speed, full-contact action and plenty of adrenaline. Roller Derby has all the ingredients to make the leap from niche curiosity to the next big thing. It’s also ridiculously addictive to watch.

Stupidity is back. (Did it ever really leave?) According to the title, Jackass: Best and Last is both the greatest and, more importantly, the final Jackass film. The franchise that defined the 2000s with its unique blend of absurdity, recklessness and questionable decision-making became a cult phenomenon for an entire generation and laid the groundwork for countless prank and stunt channels that later appeared on YouTube. Idiocy sells – apparently, that much hasn’t changed.

And I have to admit, I’m curious to see what kinds of pranks and dares a group of men who are now mostly in their fifties have come up with. A bunch of twenty-somethings making fools of themselves somehow makes sense. Why you’d still be doing it after 50 remains a complete mystery to me.

Do I still desperately want to see the film? Absolutely. Because stupidity, especially when mixed into a cocktail of nostalgia and chaos, works for me too.

In September, Zurich will once again be rolling out the red, (actually it’s green,) carpet as the Zurich Film Festival returns to the city. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes, volunteering is the perfect way to find out. The festival is looking for helping hands across a wide range of areas, from cinema box offices and guest services to technical support and festival administration. Volunteers are well looked after, with meals provided, a festival badge, a goodie bag filled with sponsor gifts and, of course, the chance to catch a few films along the way. Curious?
